The folks at Rodale Press have done a great job with Backpacker. Smart, fun and no-nonsense, it's packed with practical information for hikers of all skill levels. While I wish they would focus a little less on the great hikes out west, I find the information and recommendations they make to be invaluable.

Their annual gear guide is top-notch, although you'll need to make sure that the stuff you're looking at is current fare--especially with electronics--but I've never been dissatisfied by taking their advice.
