Break, shake, and let there be light!
I have a bunch of these, and I've found them to be quite useful. I keep a few in my car, JIC, and they make good "night lights" for guests when they stay over at my apartment. They are also perfect for lighting the inside of a tent while camping. You may also want to get the GI holder for these, which lets you adjust the amount of light that comes out, or lets you shut it off entirely.
There are a bunch of colors available, but the yellow ones seem to be the easiest on the eyes. The green and red are a little awkward to use, since the wavelengths are nowhere near white light.
The Cyalume brand has 3 types of light sticks, small (too tiny for anything but a trail marker) large 12 hour, and large high-intensity. I honestly can't see any difference between the high intensity and the regular 12 hour sticks except that the 12 hour sticks last a heck of a lot longer.
